New Video: Working On the Marriage

Looks like Christine's and Kody's marriage will be a major story arc this season. Now that we have a better and longer clip, what are your thoughts? Do you agree with Meri (from Becoming Sister Wives)  that Christine is the better actor in the family? Or, do you feel Christine's pain is real and she's not just trying to make good TV?

Also, according to Lindsay Whitehurst at sltrib.com, there was a disagreement between Christine and Kody on celebrating Joseph Smith's birthday. It is a tradition in Christine's family, but apparently not in Kody's world, so they celebrated Hannukah instead. <say whut??> Here's the url if you're interested to read more: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/blogspolygblog/54081446-191/family-wife-bigamy-brown.html.csp

  1. Was at JFK airport on 9 May and was standing in line to get some ice cream, when I look over and who do I see? Kody and all the wives, a blond girl (maybe a child, but didn't recognize due to bleach blonde unnatural looking hair) and baby sol. Koday was all over Robyn and Sol, while the other wives and possible other female child just sat there. Everyone looked sad. What I thought was ironic was they seem to think that they are celebs, when in fact, in a very crowded airport, no one was talking to them or surrounding them, like you would expect with a celeb. Managed to get a few pics, but didn't want to seem like a crazy stalker. Talked to Meri (she was getting ice cream too) and she was suprisingly nice. I didn't let on that I knew who she was, but just engaged in small talk.

By the way, the first thing that made me realize who they were way Kody's awful hair! I saw blonde, shaggy hair and thought "wow, how ugly" and then I saw it was him. He more unattractive in person as he is on TV and I can't see why these women are with him.

    1. That's interesting to know, thanks for the airport update!
1st of all, I wonder why Sol got to go along? I wonder how the other wives felt about that, esp Christine. Hopefully the blonde girl, was a travel nanny to help out w/ Sol. Unless they took one of their daughters out of school, just so she could go along to help watch Sol. If that's the case, that wasn't very responsible of the adults,..but afterall, it's the Browns we're talking about...smh
Of course,Kody is gonna be all over Sol & Robyn in public. He has to appear as a doting & "hands on & involved" dad & husband. Hopefully, he wasn't showing to much PDA w/ Robyn. I thought that was a big no-no when the other wives are present?
Doesn't really surprise me that they all seemed sad. Just don't see how they can basically just settle for 1/4 of husband, & even then...
I don't care who you are, the romantic in all of us, secretly craves total romance, attention, love, adoration, being swepted off our feet, etc..every once in a while.
Surprising that they didn't have people flocking to them, bcuz they all say, esp Meri, that people recognize them everywhere they go,blah, blah, blah.... U would think that after doing a few national interviews that folks would be swarming them...I wonder if that bruised their celebrity egos a bit?...lol

    2. Very interesting about the airport. Kody and Robin continue to make me ill. I know that Robin doesn't want to be portrayed as a homewrecker but her and Kody really are.

    3. In all fairness to poor Sol.... he's a nursing baby... so of course he goes along.... my own nonplyg babies got to go along on outings when they were nursing and their sibs weren't now!

  2. I am so confused by the celebrating of Hannukah by them. We know them not to be Jewish, thus... why are they celebrating the Festival of Lights? Doesn't make much sense in my head, but them again, this family doesn't usually make much sense to me. And now, it kind of makes me want to watch the season premiere just so the "reasoning" for the celebration can be explained to me.

  3. Again, Meri has all the answers. She is so mean and manipulative. So tired of her ALWAYS stirring the pot and then acting like she had nothing to do with it.

    1. Oh, Meri! Now, granted, she was probably given this as a talking point while they were filming the family. But still, she sounds like a witch-with-a-"b".

This video is real, it's painful. The woman is trying so hard to do what she thinks is "right".

  5. I've never like Meri, something about her I could never put my finger on, I think she is weird. I think that Christine is genuine when it comes to her religion, Janelle seems to me like she is more of a "buddy" to Kody then a wife. Robin, well lets just say if she don't stop crying I'm going to scream! I don't have a problem with their relationships since they are consenting adults but I feel for Christine and Janelle the most, I don't know what it is but I feel a sadness that they are being robbed of a fulfilled relationship, Meri and Robin seem more in love with each other then any of them combined!

  6. Wow, Kody says Christine has really changed and she needs to own "her stuff"...way to be sensitive there Kody! This guy is a bigger Douche than I thought. I'm so hoping that these changes in Christine means that she is growing and seeing things for what they clearly are so she can escape this abusive lifestyle and get out! It's clear to me that not only is Kody the abuser in these relationships but he has an accomplice and her name is Meri.

    1. Well said :) I am looking so forward to the day when Christine and Janelle make their get away. Between the two of them and their great kids they will do just fine. And if they could get their own reality show on TLC to boost the first year I would cheer:)

    2. I would love to see a reality show with just Christine and Janelle. I think Kody has some damn nerve saying Christine needs to own her stuff, what a jerk! What a great husband. I bet Kody secretly wishes Meri, Janelle and Christine leave him so it could be just him and Robin and their gross love.

    3. OMG!!! Kody makes me ill. And that business about "Christine changing, etc, etc...of course she's changed!!! Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Kody off with Robyn and being all smoochy boochy with her, at least, part of the time Christine was in labor with Truly? Dah, Kody. That would change any woman. I'm no expert on this lifestyle, but I have read numerous books written by women who escaped polygamy, as well as watched several documentaries about polygamy. I interviewed Flora Jessop and Rowena Erikson via telephone for a paper I wrote for class I was taking. I would have loved to have gotten to interview Jim Harmston, who founded a polygamist sect in Manti, Utah, but not so curiously, none of the men would agree to an interview, including the normally chatty Tom Greene. Greene was facing legal charges, though. To my knowledge, he is still in prison. That being said, I have yet to find one situation where this lifestyle is beneficial to a woman's emotional or mental health. I, also, suspect that Kody would prefer that other wives step back, so he could be exclusively with Robin till he tires of her and moves onto wife number five. Of course, he'd never want the other three wives to disappear completely. If they did, then who would support him financially? This show isn't going to last forever. Maybe some polygamist family could convince me that all was blissful if it didn't seem as though they were trying so hard to make it seem as though they were living an ideal life.

  9. Here we are again, about a year or so later, & Christine's relationship w/ Kody obviously hasn't gotten any better from before. What bothers me, is that TLC briefly touched on the depth of this relationship. Enough to let us know, yes, problems do exist & that she was depressed & on meds. Then miraculously, everything was better, so much she was supposedly weaning herself off the meds. IMO, her stating she was all better now & weaning herself off meds was clearly for show or perhaps getting pressure from Kody & the others to minimize to essentially eliminate Rx's, when in reality she should've continued w/ the meds & counseling for that matter, bcuz clearly she's still depressed & still struggling w/ lots of issues in their marriage. She's not able to turn to her sister wives(except maybe, Janelle) for the emotional support she desperately needs. In any successful relationship, communication is key. As the saying goes, it takes 2 to Tango, so it takes a certain level of unconditional love, committment, understanding, compassion, work, desire & compromise from both individuals to have a successful marriage, esp when life throws lots of curve balls at you. So, you better know how to bob & weave pretty good too..lol
A part of me, is saddened & makes me feel a lil compassion towards Christine, only bcuz she's a victim of her own beliefs & a faith that teaches her plural marriage is her key to eternal salvation. So she has to live a life here on earth in denial that literally oppresses women,(even though they don't seem to think so...) to gain access into their celestial kingdom...smh She's obviously a very loving, devoted, & caring wife, & I just feel she deserves the same to be reciprocated & it's highly unlikely she's ever gonna get that from Kody.
So the other part of me, doesn't feel sorry for her, only becuz she has made it clear to America, that they're all consenting adults & should have the right to choose their lifestyle, blah, blah, blah....So, with this in mind, it's hard for me to have pity on anyone who is constantly justifying their relationship & isn't willing to help themselves. She's a big girl, has chosen to live this lifestyle, so she just needs to suck it up or get out of this toxic "marriage". IMO, all of the wives will always carry resentment, bitterness, anger & emptiness in their hearts which tends to manifests in many ways!!

    4. Just a thought about "weaning off the meds" ... just lost our health insurance and I found out that my meds for anxiety and depression now cost over $400 a month ... they don't have jobs so I highly doubt they have insurance. Even if the kids qualified for some sort of aid, at least in Missouri, adults don't get aid without being approved by Social Security for a severe disability... Christine might be having to wean herself because the family priority hasn't been placed on her need for her medication. Post partum depression untreated can go on for years, and she's definitely had many additional depression triggers since the birth of Truley.

Fascinated by the Mormon church, especially the offshoots such as the 'Sisterwife' community and those ruled by W Jeffs I spent a few hours tonight watching videos of those who found a greater truth and left. This video is interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56jd4Jzs1LI&feature=g-vrec as well as a few more that were linked to it.

An oppressive religion Mormonism is even without the multiple wife belief. Reinforces to me why organized religion can be a very manipulative thing.

I think I will just keep to my own 'religion' that being a loving, happy, optimistic person with a full life is what makes life worth living. (And bonus, no one gets hurt!)

  12. Considering that Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday, I was curious what the possible connection between LDS & Hanukkah would be...Mormons & Jews believe in the Passover, among other things. Google the connection between Mormons & Hanukkah, & you'll get lots of stuff, that you can sift thru & form your own opinions.
Seems that Christine was just spouting off bible references about God being our lightsource & letting our light shine in this world, etc...simply using the lighting of the candles as props to emphasize her own spiritual message, totally disregarding the real meaning behind the Hannukah celebrations & traditions.
I'm not that familiar with the history of the holiday, so I don't know too much about it...but I didn't see a Menorah among them , unless I totally missed it. I also, wonder if they celebrated all 8 days & lit a candle every night? If they celebrated it to the full extent, I suspect that all of them would make out like bandits w/ gifts...
I'm curious to know, if this has always been a tradition in their family, or if this was just for the cameras??

    1. Do you recall the Twitter post by one of Christine's girls that said something about, 'Progressive=more than one mom, Jack= pick and choose what they want from the Mormon religion,' etc, ..I'm sorry, I can't remember the rest. But maybe this pseudo-Hanukkuh celebration has something to do with this 'picking and choosing' parts of religion thing they seem to do.

I agree with some of the other posters that say the Brown's seem to have put religion on the back burner. I would not be surprised if Kody received a higher calling about leaving the AUB and starting his own sect or offshoot. It seems they have a new region, and they worship fame and celebrity.

    1. If it weren't for the diagnosis of clinical depression, I would probably agree with you. But the fact that a medical doctor prescribed antidepressants changes the game. Depression is a physical, biological condition, and it affects how the brain works, including how depressed people think. Link below is from the Mayo Clinic showing two PET scans of human brains, one depressed one not.

      http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/medical/IM00356

Here is another scientific study showing that neurotransmitters are involved with depression

      http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2009/04/29/state-institute-pioneers-depression-findings-pet-scan-research

It is a physical malady, and it responds to medication. Would Kody judge Robyn for seeking a doctor's help if she broke her leg? Why the negativity if a wife seeks counseling?

Of course Christine's personality is different now. She is suffering from Depression. Christine needs MEDICAL TREATMENT not callous and snide comments about "owning her stuff" or "looking inside herself".

      Delete
    2. My comment was not directed at Christine's depression - I'm making a point that all Kody's wives knew what they were getting into. I'm sure Christine saw firsthand (being so connected in the polygamous community) how polygamous wives generally become very unhappy. If you touch a hot pan, your going to get burned. If you are going to share the love of your life with multiple women, you are going to be unhappy, and possibly clinical depressed.

That said, I'm not a callous person, I do have a degree of sympathy for her, and I've said many times I hope she can find a way to get better and be happy (preferably by leaving Kody). But reality is, she isn't going to. She's never going to leave and now that she is clinically depressed, her thinking process is going to hinder her even more....

      It's sad, but not surprising.

      Delete
    3. I do not believe it is logical for a woman to enter into polygamy and all the abuses that I see going with it (even in the Brown household). Especially if a woman has seen her mom feeling all the pain.

The only way I can understand the situation is to resign myself to the idea that tremendous peer pressure and shame was used to coerce Christine's young mind into thinking that "this is good."

It seems like I read a comment about how Christine thought ill of her mom when she divorced her dad. I can only speculate that she thought her mom was in the wrong throughout the marriage and caused her own suffering, and that Christine would avoid all that by being a "real fundamentalist Mormon." Oh the irony.

It is hard to hear the word Cult applied to ones own religion. However when extreme group think and coercive tactics are used, people can be made to do all sorts of illogical things that are against their own natural instinct for self preservation. Escaping that tyrannical and oppressive mindset is extremely difficult for many people.

      Just my opinion.

That said, I think that Christine has the gumption to escape, find the support she needs outside Kodyworld and live a joyful life. I hope she finds the right time to make her move and make a new start. I agree she should take Janelle with her.

    4. Modern Wife, I see the point ur making & I agree w/ you...
Now, please correct me if I'm wrong, but you have past personal experience w/ polygamy? Reason, why I'm asking, is bcuz I believe experience is the best teacher. U sharing 1st hand knowledge & stories, about this lifestyle, would be welcomed & great insight to some of the new folks to SWB.
People seem to think that we're too harsh, mean, or being judgemental..but it's our right to question immoral lifestyles, religions, cults, & even authority. It's our right to express our views & opinions... essentially just a friendly debate to where we agree to disagree...

    5. CB--let your conscience be your guide. I hope Christine gets the meds and counseling she needs. Janelle obviously gives her support, but it looks like she needs more. Living away from Meri must be helping too, I think.

  14. People say the mainstream "Mormon" church has changed its teachings over the years (Example: Black people can now hold the Priesthood) to be "socially acceptable." If you are familiar with the AUB (the church the browns belong to) they are STRONGLY opposed to gay people and black people in general. They won't let ANYONE who is black even join their church. But now Kody says he supports gay marriage. Way to be politically correct Kodster. Does Kodster REALLY believe in the AUB's teachings then? Hmmmm... I know for a fact his religion doesn't celebrate the Jewish celebration of Hanakkah. But as we clearly see in the previews of their upcoming interviews they are "changing" that sacred celebration to represent God giving light to you and then having the kids "let their own light shine." If they want people to respect their religion they SHOULD NOT change someone else's rPeligious ceremony. If they just called it a light ceremony instead of Hanukkah (like they did in the media interview) then it wouldn't be a problem.

    1. I dont believe that so much they follow any religion. I feel that they are more modern then most in that religion. Mostly I see them make their own way and do what feels good. They seem somewhat confused and I believe Kody has made his own religion with this harem of wives. Janelle appears to be staying to make a buck ... she clearly has no relationship with Kody. Christine wants one and cant seem to get the one she wants and is floating around and finally figured out to keep your enemy (Robyn) close. Meri is a freak picking out new wives to add in the family. Most these women control Kody and I dont see him as a masculine leader of the family type at all. More like a addict without the drugs and alcohol. He is something else and I do believe they all stay in it right now for the money they earn from the show. Will they be together in 10 years? I doubt if ALL of them will be together.

    1. It may be another name for a pre-existing company that Janelle had listed under her name in 2008:
E Z Pantry & at the time the company says its a business "to provide, market, design, sell or trade in the food storage industry"
Also over the years, Kody has had 2 businesses listed in his name: Bricksoft, a custom computer programming Company & Das Hundaus Firearms & accessories.
I'm totally thinking WTF???...More craziness, conniving, cheating & stealing from the govt...I don't give a rats ass how they try to spin it as a "family business" & say they or he has 15 different jobs, blah, blah, blah...From the looks of it, they have always had "family businesses" even before TLC, but
If you ask me, I say most of their businesses aren't legit at all. They are just a ghost business to use as a front so they can get the max tax credit benefits, exemptions, etc...
I also, feel that they moved to Vegas, so they wouldn't have to pay a huge income tax on their big TLC payout. In Vegas, U don't have income tax there...so, it was definitely a calculated move on their part.
I betcha Utah could easily prosecute them for Bankruptcy, welfare & tax fraud/evasion, if they had the manpower to dig deep & thoroughly investigate their finances over the past 20+ yrs...They don't have a very good financial history & have acquired several bankruptcies over the past years. Even after the 1st & 2nd season of SW aired, Christine & Robyn were both receiving food stamps & welfare. U have to wonder, How can folks who has a tarnished financial history as theirs & have always had "finite resources" continue to "Open or start-up" new businesses, year after year? Something's definitely not right in how they handle their finances, taxes, etc...& it's only a matter of time, before all of their tax schemes come to a head & are exposed & they will be held accountable!!

    2. To 1st Anon ... Never underestimate the absolute power of beliefs that you've been taught from the get go... Christine appears to deeply and genuinely believe that their religous teachings are THE way to be acceptable to God. Deeply ingrained beliefs that are generational like that are hard to truly ever shed completely ... speaking as someone who has had to come to terms with a heritage of a certain type of religious belief that I personally cannot believe in 100 percent. She's happy with her beliefs, it's the application that's causing her pain. But she's been told since she was old enough to understand that she was a female that her parameters of determining her "pleasingness to God" was through subservience of self for a larger group. Her extended family and most likely most of her social support network are all of that specific faith... it's much more complicated than "why is she there anymore if she's not happy." It's like one of us being really broke and poor and terribly unhappy living in the US, and everyone on some tropical island just looking at us and saying "look how unhappy and unhealthy that paying all those bills and running that busy materialistic american lifestyle is, why doesn't she just come here!?" Well, because I don't have any money to get there, nor do I know anyone there to help me acclimate, and I don't really even understand a lot about the values of the people on that island... I can SEE that it seems a lot easier over there, but leaving my family and support system (meaning her religion - not the brown clan) for the unknown, without the means to getting there just isn't as easy as they think at first when they suggest I leave and go there and do like they do.

For her the concept of leaving would be deeply wreching, fraught with multiple dimensions of angst and issues ...
I think for me, while I am ashamed at my fastination of them, sort of like being ashamed of wanting to take a peek as I drive by a horrific traffic accident on the interstate, my heart goes out to, at least the three original wives, because of the indoctrination they grew up with ... except that's not really true if Janelle chose to convert to the religion after being married to her first husband. Still, they're trying to live lives of "righteousness" and they belive their path is the only way to do that, no matter how hard or unhappy it may be in "this life." They are living this life for a bigger one they believe will come next.

  16. This clip was hard to watch. As much as I would leave if I were in Christine's shoes and/or be super-depressed and upset, it's painful to see the process. If this is what they've got this year, they might lose that #1 ratings spot. The Browns make it so easy to feel holier than thou, but this is awfully close to home.

  17. Maybe Christine has vowed to never leave Kody, bc when her mom left her dad she absolutely devastated. That divorce seemed to damage her, and maybe she's resolved never put her own children through what she went through. After seeing the video and reading the comments, that is what popped in my head. What do you guys think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You may be right, Ms. J. I think we are only seeing (from the book and TV)a fraction of what's actually going on with her life. And her making a vow to herself never to divorce would make sense -- it seems she wanted to be the perfect wife but things just didn't work out that way (Meri and Robyn, and Kody's spiritual and mental immaturity). Now she's "stuck". I have no doubt she believes wholeheartedly in her faith, but damn, I know I wouldn't have the strength to stay in that environment! It's so sad, she really deserves better! But that's the life she chose.

      Delete
    2. I think it's a double-edge sword. Even though she was deeply hurt by her parent's divorce, I think she needs to look at the bigger picture... Hurt your children by divorcing their father or stay in a marriage and hurt your children by allowing them to watch you suffer. Either way, the children are hurt. I had a friend in college (only child) and her parents lived apart, hated each other, but were still married because they didn't want her to come from a "broken" home, which I thought was just stupid.

  18. Mrs. J and Cynical J

Because Christine isn't legally married to Kody, she can't divorce him. And given that the four wives live in separate houses, she wouldn't be "leaving" him. it seems to me that she (and Janelle) are slowly beginning to acknowledge that Meri and Robyn are Kody's two wives....one legal and one between the sheets.

    1. Yep, that's so true & simply a "matter of fact" way of looking at it too :D ...If only Christine could rationalize this easily about it...& we can only hope that Christine & Janelle are re-evaluating their relationships w/ Kody & their self worth & come to realize that they do deserve to be in a more fulfilling relationship of their own. Boy that would be some great tv to see Kody's priceless facial expressions & reactions coming home not only to 1, but 2 empty & deserted homes o_O I think he would panic more, to see Janelle go,only bcuz she's the accountant & main breadwinner in the family.

      Delete
  19. I bet that living away from Meri is giving both Christine and Janelle a new sense of self worth. They may be realizing they don't need someone controlling them and bossing them around all the time. I am guessing that is the real reason Kody wants them to live closer. He wants Meri to get C & J back in line. C & J have tasted freedom and won't go back! Little by little…

    ReplyDelete
  20. Agree, Judy. And Christine's Mom was never legally married, so she never divored. In all the polygamist books, the plural wives never say they got divorced. They all talk about how they escaped or left. Christine is just using the word divorce to put a political spin on this and put down all those people who are divorced and who are not as good as her.

Meri talks about how she wants her children to be polygamists because of how blessed they have been. Kody says he will take a 5th wife if he is lead by God to do so. Robyn says that she wanted to have additional wives in the first marriage, but that 7 years was just not enough time for them to add more wives. (Kody certainly managed to do so, though. Guess he is the better man.)

All this is so perverse. They live a different reality than the rest of us. They publish a book that is hailed by some as a "masterpiece" and there is no mention of the bankuptcies, or the food stamps, or the under-age marriages of Christine's Mom and her grandfather.

What is the world coming to? I worry about our country. I wonder if we are moving toward a different world: a world where "Becoming Sister Wives" is the new "Mein Kampf"?
